The collection consists of papers of Charles Green from 1850-1881, 1903. Included within the collection is correspondence from Green during his imprisonment at Fort Warren (Boston, Mass.); a hand painted memorium document in honor of Green's death (1881); Green's will; a furniture inventory of Green's Savannah home; news clippings pertaining to Green's imprisonment and death; a manuscript describing General William T. Sherman's occupation of Green's Savannah home; and a War Dept. document explaining Green's 1861 arrest (1901).

Sherman was born in 1820 in Lancaster, Ohio, near the banks of the Hocking River. His father, Charles Robert Sherman, a successful lawyer who sat on the Ohio Supreme Court, died unexpectedly in 1829. He left his widow, Mary Hoyt Sherman, with eleven children and no inheritance. Charles Green (1807-1881) born in Liverpool, England, immigrated to Savannah, Georgia during the 1820's and participated in the cotton shipping and commission business. Returning from a visit to Europe in 1861, Green was arrested as a Confederate agent and imprisoned at Fort Warren in Boston, Massachusetts. Upon his release from prison, Green returned to Savannah.
